February 7, 2019, NPFOWL member Barbara Lockhart, presented before the City of North Port Commission a request for approval for the placement of some“Sandhill Crane Area” signage along Panacea Blvd. -- in an effort to increase driver awareness of the presence of these birds along that roadway.
The Commission approved Barbara’s request pending confirmation by Public Works of the FDOT rules and pending confirmation of the cost per sign. This final information will be brought back to Commission at a meeting in the near future and we anticipate Public Works will receive the green light from Commission to proceed with installation of the signage at that time.
NPFOWL is now looking to continue tracking sightings of sandhill cranes elsewhere in the City. We plan to use the data collected to determine if other roadways around the City are also frequented by these birds so that such signage would be installed there as well..
We hope you will help us help these vulnerable birds by reporting a sighting; you can do this by sending an email to npfowlsightings@gmail.com . Please provide your name, location of the sandhill cranes - cross streets or address if available, date and time of sighting, total number of sandhill cranes and the number of juveniles and adults. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out. Thanks!
